1/17/2024 0 Comments Prey video game foot tapping![]() I think you could make the case that the aesthetic, like an entire visual and aural vocabulary of sci-fi action games from the 90s on, comes from Total Recall (and Aliens but that’s a different post ). Seeing Total Recall in a theater for the first time in forever was amazing.īut at the same time it’s a bit telling. You know why the headcrabs in Half-Life 1 are awesome? They hop directly into your field of view to attack and you can hit them with a crowbar once and they die.Ībout a month ago Bethesda did this marketing partnership with Alamo Drafthouse wherein the Alamo screened some films that various Arkane folks said inspired the game, the two playing at the one by us were Total Recall and The Matrix. I love how they look and move outside of actually getting close and attacking though. The enemies in general, I mean I think they painted themselves into a corner with the design of them because the feedback when you’re attacking them isn’t so hot. With what was available in the demo at least it felt too repetitive and oh man, small things you have to look down to attack? Noooooo!!! A huge pet peeve of mine. Going by the demo I love absolutely everything about this game and it scratches a bunch of itches for me at once EXCEPT for the actual combat. Mimics and the way you play against them sounds pretty neat. There’s a waxy, unpleasant sheen to everything that doesn’t help the actually very pretty texture work put in by the artists. The characters and their animations convinced me I was about to play Small Soliders, which is a movie I rather liked and would not ruin for myself with an ill-advised excursion into the Uncanny Valley. I stared desultorily at the enormous passing BETHESDA PRESENTS (one chopper ride later) PREY. Outside might as well be a JPEG for all its personality. Alex’s apartment feels like an AirBNB s/he’s staying in for the weekend, and does nothing to give a sense of person or place. It lasts a meager 15-20 seconds, but it felt so much longer. Maybe I’m in “a mood” at the moment, but nothing about it clicked for me everything felt wrong on an instinctual level.īethesda still doesn’t know what to do with its opening sequence, as evidenced by the wholly unnecessary helicopter-cum-wagon-ride. I just deleted the demo, before so much as participating in the first test.
